Maruyama Masao was born June 19, 1941 in Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Being a film producer, he is a 40-plus year veteran of the animation business and the co-founder of Studio Madhouse, one of the leading animation production companies in the world.He also served as the president for Madhouse, then board of directors member and chief creative officer until moving on to Mappa.
This attitude in part has been the reason why he has encouraged the studio to take on projects that may not seem like sure-fire commercial hits. In addition, Maruyama has long been a supporter of bringing new talents into the animation business, and continues to encourage young people to work in anime. In 2011, he left Madhouse and founded Mappa.
