1 de ago. de 2018 · The statue of John Ballance can be considered as one half of a pair with the statue of Richard Seddon in front of the Parliament House. Together, ‘the two statues embody the importance of the Liberal government of the 1890s and 1900s in bringing in a wide range of social and labour reforms’ to New Zealand.
Ballance, John. This biography, written by Tim McIvor, was first published in the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography in 1993. John Ballance was born at Ballypitmave, near Glenavy in County Antrim, Ireland, into a comfortably off but not prosperous family. His date of birth is said to have been 27 March 1839; he was baptised on 7 April that year.
John Ballance was called upon, to form a Ministry. He was Premier for only two years before death cut short his work and plans; but short as it was that period of extraordinary legislative vigour was long enough to enable Ballance and his party to bring in and pass into law an instalment of the great Liberal policy measures which attracted world wide attention to New Zealand.
The Ballance Statue in Parliament Grounds, Wellington, was unveiled on 7 April 1897 as a tribute to John Ballance (1839-1893), who served as New Zealand Premier from 1891 until he died in office in 1893. Commemorating an important figure in New Zealand’s political history, the monument is of historical, aesthetic and social significance.
