A soldier’s biography. Władysław Anders was born on 11 August 1892 into a Polish-speaking family of German, Swedish and Hungarian descent. In 1910 he was conscripted into the Russian army as a so-called one-year volunteer. He studied at Riga Polytechnic, and in the first World War led a cavalry troop in the tsarist army.

Born in 1892 in the Russian partition of Poland, to parents of Baltic-German origin, Władysław Anders completed his secondary education in Warsaw and studied civil engineering at Riga Technical University. After graduating, he joined the Russian Army and served as an officer during the First World War.
Anders, who was wounded, led his brigade south to the relative safety of Hungary. Unfortunately, he was captured by Soviet troops on September 30. Soldiers of the Polish 2nd Corps participate in the final assault on Monte Cassino on May 18, 1943. Surviving a brutal captivity, Anders was a prisoner for two years.
