William Westmoreland (1914-2005) was a United States Army general and commander of US forces in Vietnam between 1964 and June 1968. Westmoreland was born into an affluent middle-class family in South Carolina, his father a textile plant manager. As a teenager, Westmoreland was heavily involved in the Boy Scouts movement.
