Biografie Jugend. Phil Lesh begann mit 14 Jahren Trompete zu spielen. Er begann an der UC Berkeley zu studieren, brach aber mitten im ersten Semester ab. Er schrieb sich in der Klasse des Komponisten Luciano Berio am Mill’s College ein, wo er mit Tom Constanten, der später ebenfalls für kurze Zeit den Grateful Dead angehören sollte, Avant-garde- und elektronische Musik studierte.
