Sonic Youth [ˈ s ɒ n ɪ k j u θ] [4] est un groupe de rock avant-gardiste américain, originaire de New York.Formé en 1981, il est considéré comme l'une des figures majeures du rock alternatif [5].Les membres fondateurs Thurston Moore (guitare, chant), Kim Gordon (basse, chant, guitare) et Lee Ranaldo (guitare, chant) resteront ensemble pendant la totalité de l'existence du groupe.
Der Name Sonic Youth ist eine Verbindung aus Big Youth, einem jamaikanischen Reggae-Deejay, der insbesondere in den 1970er Jahren Berühmtheit erlangte, und Sonic’s Rendezvous Band, einer Nachfolgeband von MC5, die deren Gitarrist Fred „Sonic“ Smith von 1977 bis 1979 leitete.
