With The Boxtrolls, LAIKA tackles its first period piece as well as its first creature-oriented tale about an orphan boy raised underground by cave-dwelling trash collectors. By combining handmade artistry with new technologies like 3D printing, the studio behind Coraline and ParaNorman has revitalised the 100-year-old genre.
The Boxtrolls easily makes the grade. I was immediately drawn into the movie, the world around me simply went away. To me, THAT'S what makes a good movie! Eggs is so likeable, the Boxtrolls so cute and industrious, and the villain so despicable, that I wasn't even bothered by his extremely well deserved, not as gross as it could have been, demise.
