Though never exactly in or out of critical fashion, Melville’s gangster films can be seen as a major influence on many of the crime films from the 1960s onwards, while Le Silence de la mer , Les Enfants terribles , and Bob le flambeur can be regarded as fairly direct antecedents to the nouvelle vague .
