Son of the sculptor and special effects photographer Eugenio, Mario Bava started his career in the movie industry as a cinematographer, working under his father’s guidance.

That’s because Bava is one of the most influential filmmakers the genre’s ever widened its eyes to – leaving his bloody thumbprints on the formation of some of the most famous franchises in cinema history… even if he didn’t actually direct any of them.

Of the “Big 3” of Italian horror filmmakers—Mario Bava, Dario Argento, and Lucio Fulci—Bava seems, on the basis of my admittedly unscientific research, to be the least well known. If one were to do even a cursory perusal of those corners of the internet that care about such things, one would find ample discussion of Argento and Fulci but relatively little about Bava.
