Work began the instant after the marquess came of age in 1868. Just three years later Burges turned his attention to Castell Coch. He suggested two possible courses of action. Number one – leave the ruins as they were. Number two – restore them ‘as a country residence for occasional occupation in the summer’. It was never in doubt.

I’ve been fascinated by Castell Coch since moving to Tongwynlais and launching a website about the village. In the last 8 years, I’ve written lots of articles about the castle and started a collection of memorabilia and historical items. I don’t work for Cadw and this site is purely a personal project.
Castell Coch, Cardiff. Castell Coch is nestled among the beautiful Fforest Fawr in Tongwynlais, Cardiff. The castle’s strategic position overlooking the Taff Gorge provides expansive views down the valley towards Cardiff. The iconic landmark sits on the northern boundary of the city, close to Caerphilly and Rhondda Cynon Taff.
1 de ene. de 2024 · Castell Coch is owned by Cadw so it’s a tourist attraction that is open throughout the year apart from the Christmas holidays and New Year. The castle is typically open in winter from 10 am to 4 pm. In summer, it’s open from 9.30 am – 6 pm. It’s good to note that they also close completely for an hour at lunchtime.
