Andrew Geoffrey Kaufman is raised in the affluent Long Island suburb of Great Neck and gravitates towards show business at an early age. Before he is even a year old, Andy reaches from his crib to work the controls of a nearby phonograph.

Kaufman died of lung cancer on May 16, 1984, at the age of 35. Although he had large-cell carcinoma of the lung — a disease typically attributed to years of smoking cigarettes — Kaufman was a non-smoker.
