It was based on the 1860 play by Eugène Labiche which had previously been turned into a 1928 silent film version by René Clair.
An overly timid lawyer messes up in court and earns the enmity of a wife beating thug. Years later the thug is out and the, still timid, Lawyer and he are competing for a girl. René Clair directs a Harold Lloyd comedy! Okay, this doesn't feature Harold Lloyd himself, but a French version taking a lot of inspiration from Lloyd's shy-guy persona.
