Mia Kirshner wurde 1975 in der kanadischen Provinz Ontario als Tochter des in Deutschland geborenen Sheldon Kirshner, Journalist bei der The Canadian Jewish News, und seiner aus Bulgarien stammenden Ehefrau Etti, einer Englischlehrerin, geboren.
