I think it sums up the difference between the bands well: That's kind of the point though, that's what makes the two bands so different. In a nutshell the grateful dead were more about free group improvisation.

  7. The Grateful Dead are Americana, rooted in blues, bluegrass and folk, yet found a way to break these molds through psychedelic exploration. Phish is rooted more in Progressive Rock, and while they trained and can play blues, bluegrass and folk, I almost think of their music as more theatrical, especially in the case of the Gamehenge canon.
