On 29th June, 1624, Pembroke College received its Royal Charter from King James I, declaring Pembroke the newest constituent college of the University of Oxford. Four centuries later, hundreds of guests gathered across our four quads to celebrate the four-hundredth anniversary of the College’s foundation.
Openness characterises Pembroke today. The College is an intimate yet diverse community, committed to welcoming students of exceptional talent regardless of their social, cultural or educational background, and giving them the benefit of contact with a large and distinguished Fellowship.

Founded in 1347, our ancient and beautiful College is ideally situated in the heart of the city and we do all we can to help you make the most of it.

Pembroke College, a constituent college of the University of Oxford, [2] is located on Pembroke Square, Oxford. The college was founded in 1624 by King James I of England and VI of Scotland , using in part the endowment of merchant Thomas Tesdale , and was named after William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke , Lord Chamberlain and then- Chancellor of the University .
Visitors are welcome to walk round the grounds of Pembroke and to visit the Chapel if there is no service taking place; the interiors of other College building, including the Library, are private. The College is generally open every day, but is closed to visitors during the main exam period (mid May to mid June) and can be closed at other times for events, if you are traveling far you should ...
