The Mickey Hart Collection from Smithsonian Folkways preserves and furthers the Grateful Dead percussionist’s endeavor to cross borders and expand musical horizons. The collection begins with 25 albums drawn from “The World,” a series that incorporates Mickey’s solo projects, other artists’ productions, and re-releases of out-of-print titles.

Ekemode’s Nigerian All-Stars, and soon after connected with Babatunde Olatunji and became an essential member of the Drums of Passion. Knowing Olatunji brought him into the musical orbit of Mickey Hart, where he has contributed to projects from Planet Drum and the Global Drum Project to albums like Mystery Box, Supralingua, and At The Edge.
Born September 11, 1943, Mickey received a public-school music education grounded in rudimental drumming. “My father was a drummer,” says Hart in Drumming at the Edge of Magic, “my mother, too. They were rudimental drummers, which means they practiced a type of drumming that evolved out of a military tradition.”.
