Die Band wurde 1985 von Rob Zombie (damals noch unter dem Namen Rob Straker) und Sean Yseult (Shauna Reynolds) mit Peter Landau am Schlagzeug und Paul „ENA“ Kostabi, welcher ein eigenes Studio besaß und Sean das Bassspielen beibrachte, als Gitarrist gegründet. Der Bandname geht auf dem Horrorfilm The White Zombie aus dem Jahr 1932 zurück.

El grupo estadounidense de rock industrial y groove metal llamado White Zombie tomó su nombre de esta película. Deshecho en 1998, el grupo dejó canciones de contenido fantástico y surrealista , muchas de ellas influidas por películas estadounidenses de serie B o hasta en homenaje a ellas, que en cierta manera confirman la admiración de los músicos del grupo por la película de los Halperin.

Rob Zombie is a big fan of horror films and named the band White Zombie in reference to the film White Zombie released in 1932 which starred Bela Lugosi. The band broke up in 1998 after Rob Zombie released his first solo album, Hellbilly Deluxe. Despite rumors to the contrary, John Ricci, who played with White Zombie in the late 1980s, is not the artist by the same name from Exciter....
