In 1985 Kirkland (alongside Branford Marsalis) joined the Blue Turtles, the jazz-pop studio-and-touring backing band put together by Sting to perform the latter’s post-Police solo work which can be heard on his first two solo releases The Dream of the Blue Turtles and Bring on the Night.

Leben und Wirken. Kirkland hatte vom sechsten Lebensjahr an Klavierunterricht und studierte klassisches Klavier und Musiktheorie an der Manhattan School of Music.Zum Jazz kam er durch Larry Willis von Blood, Sweat & Tears, Kenny Barron und Herbie Hancock.Er orientierte sich zunächst an den Pianisten diesseits des Bebop, um dann die Älteren wie Hank Jones zu studieren.

He partied a lot, and that made him one of the boys. It almost got to the point where we'd wonder how he got to be such a great pianist.
