A milestone in the development of the American musical, it also marked the beginning of the most successful partnership in Broadway musical history, and was followed by Carousel, South Pacific, The King And I, Cinderella and The Sound Of Music.
Decades later, The Sound of Music sing-alongs would keep millions of moviegoers humming along to what might be Rodgers & Hammerstein’s most beloved show. Sadly, Hammerstein didn’t live to see it, having died from cancer in 1960.
