Lacking medical insurance, fans and musicians began sponsoring benefits to help cover his hospital bills, and in 2004, a double album entitled Por Vida: A Tribute to the Songs of Alejandro Escovedo was released to raise more money for the artist, featuring interpretations of his songs by Lucinda Williams, Los Lonely Boys, Charlie Musselwhite, Ian Hunter, the Jayhawks, the Minus 5, and 25 others.
