Carroll was a New York poet living in California when punk exploded in the late 1970s. He rightly sensed that punk was as much a lyrical stance as a musical one. Inspired by contemporaries like Patti Smith and Richard Hell, Carroll found himself a band and started spewing his literate and often fatalistic verse over a solid 4/4 beat.

The Jim Carroll Band was a New Wave/punk rock group formed by poet and writer Jim Carroll, in 1978, after encouragement from Patti Smith.The band was formerly called Amsterdam, based San Francisco, California. The musicians were: Steve Linsley (bass), Wayne Woods (drums), Brian Linsley and Terrell Winn (guitars).
17 de ago. de 1993 · If you are unfamiliar with the other releases by Jim Carroll, it would be my suggestion to pass on the single albums and go right for this 'Best Of ...' and I'm not a 'Best Of ...' fan for the most part. On “World Without Gravity” you get eighteen tracks, twelve of which are brilliant, and that speaks volumes in my book.
