Gary Numan — real name: Gary Webb — was born in London in 1958. Webb began teaching himself to play guitar in his teens. At 19, he joined his first band, Mean Street, though he was ejected from the band after only a few gigs.He then auditioned for the role of guitarist in a band called The Lasers and got the job, immediately hitting it off with the band's bassist, Paul Gardiner.

Dance is the beginning of Gary Numan's pop era, which I view as a sort of dark age. Perhaps corrupted a little by greed and fame, Gary dropped most of his previous sound in favor of something closer to the pop trends of the early 80s. That said, this is *not* a pop album.
