Het was het begin van een levenslange fascinatie voor ballet en Tsjaikovski, die resulteerde in een aantal fenomenale balletcomposities van Stravinsky’s hand.

Inició el segundo movimiento en Suiza y terminó la obra en Estados Unidos; específicamente en California, un 17 de agosto de 1940. La obra fue comisionada por Robert Woods Bliss, quien pagó $1 500 dólares al compositor.
