Prefab Sprout was formed in 1977 by the brothers Paddy McAloon and Martin McAloon, and the drummer Michael Salmon.After being rejected by many record companies they released their first record Lions in My Own Garden (Exit Someone) / Radio Love in 1982 on their own label Candle Records ("The wax that won't get on your wick"). Wendy Smith joined the group, initially to provide backing vocals.

Il nome "Prefab Sprout" gli viene in mente nel lontano 1973, ma non sarà usato ancora per molti anni. Già, perché è "Avalon" il nome del primo gruppo di cui Paddy entra a far parte: un po' alla volta i ragazzi si fanno spazio e riescono a esibirsi in vari locali, seppur per una manciata di sterline.
