Richard Briers CBE was an English actor who specialised in comic roles. He attained stardom within 3 years of beginning work as an actor, alongside Prunella Scales in the hit domestic sitcom Marriage Lines. Briers is best remembered for his starring roles in 1970s sitcom smash-hit The Good Life, and 1980s comedy Ever Decreasing Circles.
Inspired by Henry Cecil's 1955 comic novel of the same name, Brothers in Law first appeared on BBC One in 1962, providing Richard Briers with his first starring role on television as idealistic young barrister Roger Thursby. Adapted by Richard Waring from TV scripts by Frank Muir and Denis Norden, it took to the airwaves in 1970, running for three years until 1972.

Briers’ agent, Christopher Farrar, said Monday that the actor died at his London home on Sunday. A former heavy smoker, he had suffered from emphysema.
