Soft Machine se formó en 1966 por Robert Wyatt, Mike Ratledge, Kevin Ayers y Daevid Allen ().Wyatt ya había trabajado con Allen en el Daevid Allen Trio en 1963, donde Ratledge se les unía a veces para echarse un palomazo y Ayers venía de tocar con Wilde Flowers en 1964. A estos musicos innovadores se les ocurrió la idea de hacer música para la mente en lugar de hacer música para el cuerpo.
