Francis Cardozo. Cardozo was an outstanding educator and the most influential African American political leader in South Carolina during a remarkable period in its history. He was arguably the most effective and influential African American to hold elected office in the South between the Civil War and the Civil Rights era one hundred years later.
Francis Louis Cardozo was born in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1837. His father, a journalist, was white, and Cardozo's mother was of mixed African and Native American ancestry. Cardozo had at least two siblings, a brother and a sister. He attended a school for African Americans in Charleston until he was twelve.
