Gertrude Belle Elion was born in New York City on January 23, 1918. Her father emigrated from Lithuania when he was twelve years old and went on to become a dentist in the United States. Her homemaker mother arrived in the United States from Poland at the age of fourteen.
As a consequence, the element of chance has been essential in developing new pharmaceuticals. George Hitchings (1905–1998) and Gertrude Elion (1918–1999) diverged from this traditional path by deliberately designing new molecules with specific molecular structures, using what today is termed rational drug design.
Hitchings betrachtet Elion als gleichberechtigte Mitarbeiterin. Von ihnen veröffentlichte Publikationen erscheinen in beider Namen. 1988 erhielten Gertrude Belle Elion, George Hitchings und der Brite James Black für ihre Entdeckungen zu biochemischen Prinzipien der Arzneimitteltherapie den Nobelpreis für Medizin.
Gertrude Belle Elion (Nova York, 23 de gener de 1918 - Chapel Hill, Carolina del Nord, 21 de febrer de 1999) fou una farmacòloga, bioquímica i professora universitària nord-americana guardonada amb el Premi Nobel de Medicina o Fisiologia l'any 1988 que va compartir amb George H. Hitchings i Sir James W. Black.
