While it’s not totally realistic, neither is the concept of a headcrab in the first place, and because they’re not a creature that’s really possible in the real world, some of their features just aren’t going to hold up to real world logic. I think you’re probably right about headcrabs getting oxygen from the host though!
My Armored Headcrab headcanon. Unlike the other headcrab variations (Fast, Poison, Lightning), the armored headcrab is literally a reskin of the standard headcrab with added fleshy spikes on it. What if they're just normal headcrabs infected with some kind of Xen parasite?
Armored Headcrab [] The Armored Headcrab is a spiked variant of the normal headcrab. Its shell is visibly much bumpier, and has a grey color. It's spiky armored shell seemingly comes from an unknown Xenian species of plant or fungus life that can be seen throughout the environment.
Revivers, are small creatures, akin to but slightly larger than a Headcrab. They have a triple-jawed maw at the front, four claw-like limbs (two either side of the body) and a single, long tail-like tentacle at the rear. Each pair of limbs are connected by a patagium, a thin sheet of tissue similar to that of flying squirrels and sugar gliders.
