Selwyn College was founded in 1882 in memory of George Augustus Selwyn, Bishop successively of New Zealand and of Lichfield. The College was incorporated by Royal Charter on 13 th September 1882 and granted the status of a full college of the University of Cambridge on 14 th March 1958.
Selwyn College Archives is the record repository of Selwyn College. Our main objective is to collect, preserve and promote the use of records documenting the history of the College. Selwyn College was founded by public subscription in 1882 to commemorate George Augustus Selwyn (1809-78), Bishop of New Zealand.
Selwyn College is located in one of the most beautiful parts of Auckland, close to the harbour and popular beaches where people go swimming, sailing or walking and close (20 minutes by bus) from downtown Auckland City. Selwyn College is a friendly community of students and teachers with expectations of high achievement from all students.
Patronage. Selwyn College, Cambridge. George Augustus Selwyn (5 April 1809 – 11 April 1878) was the first Anglican Bishop of New Zealand. He was Bishop of New Zealand (which included Melanesia) from 1841 to 1869. His diocese was then subdivided and Selwyn was Metropolitan (later called Primate) of New Zealand from 1858 to 1868.
