Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve) Like the wild Shackleford mustangs, Beaufort's wild horses can only be reached by boat, where they have free run of the main area of Rachel Carson Reserve, made up of Town Marsh, Carrot Island, Bird Shoal and Horse Island.
We hiked Wild Horse Island State Park, and seen a herd of Rams, and we found the Wild Horses. My husband sat down near them, and they walked right up to him, and ate grass from his hand. My husband grew up around horses, and has alot of experience with them. Not everyone will have the same experience with wild horses that he did.

24 de mar. de 2023 · Wild Horse Island State Park is approximately 2164 acres. The entire island is open to hiking but to reduce the impact of visitors on the island there are no bikes permitted. The island’s elevation reaches 3749 feet making it a haven for deer, bighorn sheep, and the island’s namesake: horses. It is the largest island on Flathead Lake.
