David Hume urodził się 7 maja 1711 roku w Edynburgu. Pochodził ze średnio zamożnej ziemiańskiej rodziny spokrewnionej z hrabiami Home. Dzieciństwo spędził w majątku rodzinnym Ninewells w pobliżu Chirnside w południowo-wschodniej Szkocji (hrabstwo Scottish Borders ). Uczył się w Edynburgu.
