5. Myanmar/Thailand. The northernmost Austronesian presence in the Gulf of Thailand today is the Moken boat people who live primarily on boats in the Mergui Archipelago, Dung, and other islands in south Myanmar. There are currently some 7,000 Moken in Myanmar.
Roger Blench Nigeria is one of the most linguistically diverse regions of the world, with 500+ languages and three major language phyla represented, as well as isolate languages. The historical processes underlying this diversity remain poorly understood and a rapidly increasing research base makes continual updating essential.
