Frazer was born in Glasgow and took his MA at Glasgow University (1874) before winning a scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1879 he was elected to a fellowship at Trinity, which he held until his death.

James George Frazer est un anthropologue écossais connu pour être le premier à avoir dressé un inventaire planétaire des mythes et des rites. Les 12 volumes de son Rameau d'or, parus entre 1911 et 1915, décrivent des milliers de faits sociaux et religieux, soit relevés par l'auteur dans ses lectures ou relatés par ses correspondants cosmopolites.

James George Frazer (1854–1941) was born in Glasgow and obtained an MA from the university of that city before matriculating at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied classics. 2 A thesis entitled ‘The Growth of Plato’s Ideal Theory’ secured him a college fellowship in 1879. Thereafter, Frazer never fully abandoned either Trinity College or classics.
