Lebrun se retiró a Vizille, cerca de Grenoble, y fue posteriormente retenido por los alemanes en el Tirol entre 1943 y 1944. Con el reconocimiento del general De Gaulle como presidente del gobierno provisional cuando los Aliados liberaron Francia, Lebrun finalizó su propia carrera política.
