Nick Drake ble født i 1948 inn i en velstående engelsk familie som bodde i den engelske kolonien Burma, der faren var ansatt som ingeniør. Familien flyttet til den engelske landsbyen Tanworth-in-Arden i Warwickshire, nord i England, i 1950. Drake hadde ei søster, Gabrielle Drake, som senere ble en kjent TV- og filmskuespiller i Storbritannia.
