Francisco Manoel da Silva (Klaus Kinski), es un bandido brasileño conocido como Cobra Verde. Sin saber quién es, el terrateniente un propietario de plantación de azúcar llamado Don Octavio Coutinho (José Lewgoy), impresionado por su apariencia y personalidad intrépida, decide contratarlo como capataz de plantación.
Esta película cuenta la historia de la carrera de Francisco Manoel da Silva (Klaus Kinski), alias “Cobra Verde”, quien pasa de ser agricultor a bandido y después a comerciante de esclavos, ocurriendo todo esto bajo el encuadre de un feroz siglo colonial.
