Emma Hamilton was born Amy Lyon in 1765 and was raised for much of her early life by a single mother in deprived circumstances in Cheshire, England. In a spectacular rise fuelled by her outstanding beauty but much more her theatrical talent, charisma and great talent for languages and conversation, Emma went on to have a massive influence on European visual culture.

When in Naples, Lady Hamilton, as she now was, became a close friend of Queen Maria Carolina, sister of Marie Antoinette.

Emma Hamilton Society aims to provide positive and deserved press to Dame Emma Hamilton (her correct title is Dame as she was awarded the Maltese Cross, which made a Dame of Malta) who, we feel, has been unfairly maligned because of prevailing sexism and snobbery: she had unwedded relationships (but not promiscuously) and spoke with a common accent.
