  3. Hattie McDaniel was born June 10, 1893, to Henry McDaniel and Susan Holbert. Henry had been born into slavery on a Virginia plantation. During the Civil War, he served as a Union soldier and, after the war, he traveled around doing odd jobs as well as performing. In 1875, he settled in Nashville, Tennessee to serve as a Baptist preacher.
