The band has released four previous studio albums, IS THIS IT (2001), ROOM ON FIRE (2003), FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF EARTH (2006) and ANGLES (2011) which have sold over five million albums worldwide.

The Strokes had never used backing vocals that weren’t just Julian’s layered voice until Angles in 2011, and Comedown Machine also experiments with more than one vocal track, with 80’s Comedown Machine having some “ahhh”s in the background of the chorus, sung by Valensi in live performances.
