The school was established by Julius Hartt and Moshe Paranov in 1920 and was one of the three founding institutions of the University of Hartford in 1957. Alongside the traditional performance-oriented majors in music, dance, and theatre, the school offers programs in music history, music theory, ballet pedagogy, music education, and composition.
The Hartt School is planning to host in-person/on-campus auditions and interviews for the 2023 admission cycle. Applicants will be contacted by Hartt Admission to schedule an audition and/or interview after they submit their application to the University of Hartford. Virtual auditions will continue to be accepted by request.
The Hartt School is excited to be the first institution in the US/Canada to offer a 5-year combined Suzuki degree program. The 5-year BM/MM degree in Instrumental Performance with a Suzuki Pedagogy Emphasis offers a comprehensive pedagogical curriculum with one of the premiere Suzuki programs in the nation.
