Poet, playwright, and activist Amiri Baraka returned to his hometown of Newark in the 1980s and with his wife, poet Amina Baraka, founded Spirithouse, an educational and spiritual institution for the African American community. The Baraka’s children are good friends with the Three Doctors. Amiri passed away in 2014 at the age of 79.
In 1964, Baraka's play, The Dutchman, won an Obie Award for Best American play and it was adapted into a film in 1967. His other plays include The Black Mass, The Toilet, and The Slave. His collections of poetry include Black Art, Black Magic, Home: Social Essays, and Preface to a Twenty-Volume Suicide Note.

Amiri Baraka (born Everett LeRoi Jones) (b. 1934–d. 2014) is one of the most important African American artists and intellectuals. He was a poet, critic, essayist, musicologist, playwright, novelist, and brilliant polemicist who sought to expose through his work the historical ravages of racism and oppression.
