David "Fathead" Newman (February 24, 1933 - January 20, 2009) was an American jazz and rhythm-and-blues saxophonist who made numerous recordings as a session musician and leader, but is most well known for his work as a sideman on seminal 1950's and early 1960's recordings by singer-pianist Ray Charles.

This album introduced Newman's famous signature song, "Hard Times." Later albums included House of David, Captain Buckles and Live At the Village Gate. All of them were tremendous accomplishments for Newman and Atlantic Records.
