Bong Joon-ho nació el 14 de septiembre de 1969 en Daegu, Corea del Sur. Familia Hijo de Park So-young y Bong Sang Gyun, diseñador gráfico. Nieto del escritor Park Taeweon, famoso por su libro Un día en la vida del novelista Gubo. Tiene un hermano llamado Joon Soo, profesor de literatura inglesa, y una hermana, Jee Hee, diseñadora de moda.
