Johann Ambrosius giftede sig i 'Kaufmannskirche' med Elisabeth Lemmerhirt fra Erfurt, fra hvis familie Johann allerede havde ægtet en anden kvinde. Han boede i Junkersand 3. I 1671 bosatte han sig som hof- og stadsmusiker i Eisenach, hvor blandt andet hans søn Johann Sebastian Bach blev født.

As a boy, he went to Arnstadt, where he was trained as a Stadtpfeifer. In 1667 he became a member of the town band in Erfurt, and from 1671 he was court trumpeter and director of the town band in Eisenach.

Johann Sebastian’s mother Maria Elisabeth Lämmerhirt (1644–94) was the daughter of a furrier and town councillor in Erfurt. Her sister became the mother of Bach’s cousin J.G. Walther, and her half-sister Hedwig Lämmerhirt was the second wife of Ambrosius Bach’s uncle Johann Bach, who was organist at the Predigerkirche in Erfurt.
