El género comprende aproximadamente la mitad de los grandes félidos.
Panthera is a genus within the family Felidae, it is one of two extant genera in the subfamily Pantherinae, and contains the largest living members of the cat family. There are five living species: the jaguar, leopard, lion, snow leopard and tiger, as well as a number of extinct species.
A black panther is the melanistic colour variant of the leopard (Panthera pardus) and the jaguar (Panthera onca). Black panthers of both species have excess black pigments, but their typical rosettes are also present. They have been documented mostly in tropical forests, with black leopards in Africa and Asia, and black jaguars in South America.

La pantera negra es una variación melánica de varias especies de grandes félidos, en especial del leopardo ( Panthera pardus) y del jaguar ( Panthera onca ). No es una nueva especie, ni siquiera una subespecie, es simplemente una variación negra de estos animales.
