John Hassall, the son of a naval officer, was born in Walmer, Kent in 1868.He was an original and versatile designer of illustrations from 1895 onwards, contributing cartoons to many leading magazines, designing theatre posters, commercial posters for Messrs. David Allen and greetings cards, boys' books and nursery rhymes.

ARTIST. Hassall, John. 1868 – 1948. Cartoonist, illustrator, designer, painter and teacher, born in Walmer, Kent. He was the father of the artist Joan Hassall and the writer Christopher Hassall. After education in England and Germany, and twice failing to gain a commission at Sandhurst, he emigrated to Manitoba, Canada, where he farmed.
