  3. Wynton Marsalis wurde als zweiter der sechs Söhne des Jazzpianisten Ellis Marsalis und dessen Frau Dolores geboren. Sein älterer Bruder ist der Jazz-Saxophonist Branford Marsalis. Auch die beiden jüngeren Brüder Delfeayo (Posaune) und Jason (Schlagzeug) wurden Jazz-Musiker. Wynton begann das Trompetenspiel mit 12 Jahren.
