La J. Geils Band, formata a Boston nell'ambiente dei giovani studenti ebrei, reinvento` il garage-rock, il blues-rock all'insegna di un'esuberanza quasi punk e di un piglio quasi parodistico. Esordirono all'insegna del southern-rock che andava di moda all'inizio degli anni '70, fungendo da raccordo con i Rolling Stones e il blues revival degli anni '60.
The J. Geils Band had played literally thousands of gigs by the time they recorded Bloodshot in 1973, and the hard work paid off in the band's first Top 10 album. "We were branching out musically", says Justman. One of the Bloodshot songs that also appears on Anthology , "Give It To Me", was indeed a departure.

Those who know the J. Geils Band only for their MTV era hits (“Love Stinks,” “Centerfold,” “Freeze Frame”) don’t know the J. Geils Band at all.
