6 de jul. de 2015 · A Wizard, a True Star was not exactly meant to bitterly destroy his reputation, a la Nirvana's In Utero, but it is a deliberate attempt at artistry over the mainstream. "It was a spoof on becoming a show-biz personality," Rundgren stated. "I think I read it in a review somewhere—'a wizard, a true star'—and it just amused me.

A Wizard, a True Star, Todd, and Utopia Rundgren performing with Utopia in 1978 New York Dolls, whose 1973 debut album was produced by Rundgren. Subsequent albums, beginning with A Wizard, a True Star and the spin-off group Utopia, saw a dramatic shift away from straightforward three-minute pop.
